MODERN SCRIPTURE

EP

Across its six new songs Modern Scripture continues the group’s mission to further the hard-nosed melodic punk and charged social commentary of their 2022 debut LP American Cult Candy. On this outing though they dial it in even further; doubling down on playfully deviant religious tropes juxtaposed to themes of bottomless consumer culture, chemical escapism, absurd political theater, and tragic romance. This EP sees the band reunite with producer Matt Qualls (who also produced Joybomb’s 2023 standalone singles “Tell Tale Boys” and “Visions!” ). Tracking took place through the spring of 2024 at Qualls' Easley McCain Recording in Memphis, Tennessee.

FAITH & CHEMISTRY

SINGLE

“Faith & Chemistry” is a bright stick of bubblegum that doubles as a plastic explosive. The second single from Joybomb’s upcoming Modern Scripture EP is a sunshine banger that finds the Memphis alt rockers delivering hooks with playful cadence, a wink, and a kick in the teeth. Lyrically, it’s vulnerable and on-the-nose about toxic romance overdosed on the highs and lows of symbiosis, placating through sobriety, and the pursuit for dopamine in various forms. Sonically, “Faith & Chemistry” is Pixies-esque with a modern pop punk flare a la The Dirty Nil.

NANOPLASTIQUE

SINGLE

“Nanoplastique” is about environmental degradation and how we rationalize our competing roles as consumers and members of a broader ecosystem. Moreover, it’s a blistering dystopian creature of a song, equal parts King Gizzard, the Hives, and Queens of the Stone Age. Though the lyrics are a tongue-in-cheek embrace of a world consumed by microplastics, sonically it’s a fuel-injected rocker that invokes the more dangerous of spirits. From the first beat of the intro, “Nano” pulls no punches, save for a bridge that dives into a colorful sonic abyss and finds vocalist Beatty reading a verse from the Old Testament.

VISIONS!

SINGLE

I began writing this song on the heels of significant breakup and consequent re-evaluation of the role I played and my priorities. The frustration, intensity and immediacy you hear in the main riff and reoccurring lyrical turns (“She’s got a vision!”) are rooted in weather-wornness and obvious salty emotions. But as I spent more time developing the verses and chorus, “Visions!” took on a larger narrative. We, as individuals, perceive our intentions and interactions so subjectively; people see what they want to see and in the face of dealing with stark objective realities, we protect ourselves through self-deceit and changing our lenses. I wanted to combine lyrical and visual themes of wonder, disillusionment, perception and paranoia. Our director Nick Hein and I collaborated to bring these concepts to the screen, having worked together on Joybomb’s episode of Station 8’s “The Hum” previously.

The video takes you on a journey through the mind of someone grappling with two contrasting faces – the inner turmoil versus the outward smile. Tension in our character is brought forth through the use of mirrors, devices and the gaze of the ever-present “audience.” It's a narrative that's both deeply personal and universally relatable.

“Visions!” is Joybomb’s take on hardcore – albeit with some bubblegum thrown in. Hopefully it’s taken as fuel for whatever listeners need it for, whether breaking barriers or boards, backs or bones. Just turn it up.

TELL TALE BOYS

SINGLE

Prepare thyself for Joybomb's latest anthem, "Tell Tale Boys," arriving just in time for spooky season. This track melds choirlike vocal harmonies and upbeat punk tempos with haunting melodies and instrumentation akin to the likes of AFI and Black Sabbath. The new single explores the role of the telltale boys of the 17th-century Swedish witch trials and uses this so-called “Great Noise” in history as allegory for modern groupthink. With a sonic punch and poignant lyrics, Joybomb invites you to their cheeky sermon to combat conformity and question circumstance where mass hysteria can thrive.

Coming on the heels of last month’s hard-hitting single “Visions!”, Joybomb is keeping busy shooting music videos for both new tracks and pushing the hype with a string of live performances at home in Memphis, TN and on the road regionally to close out 2023. It’s been a momentous year of significant growth for the group and they show no signs of slowing their roll.

AMERICAN CULT CANDY

LP

The world got weirder in March of 2020 as America entered the early wave of pandemic panic and ensuing lockdown.  Meanwhile, members of Joybomb found themselves spending days underground in a recording studio in Nashville, Tennessee.  It was at Ivy Hall Studio where the band - comprised of frontman Grant Beatty and then-members Adrian Lewis and Todd Rowan – hunkered down with producer Drew Long, channeling their artistic energies into the creation of American Cult Candy.  “It felt very apocalyptic,” recalls Beatty of those first breaking news cycles.  As Joybomb launched into tracking, the surrealness of that collective moment, compounded by the glaring uncertainty of the Trump years, offered a unique creative fuel for the urgent energy and lyrical declamations found on this freshman LP.

A name like Joybomb connotates certain pop sensibilities, which the band readily serves up with addictively catchy hooks and melodies – while also staring down the personal and societal demons that have become manifest in recent years.  In this way, Joybomb is very much a punk rock band and American Cult Candy is a series of poignant and sometimes cheeky observations of the violent bubblegum dysphoria that forms the backdrop of American political and consumer culture.

Hailing from Memphis, TN, Joybomb made a pilgrimage to Nashville during this tumultuous time to collaborate with Drew Long of Rock Ridge Music, known for his work with Judah & The Lion and Chris Stapleton.  As the worlds of artistry and production collided and visions intertwined, Long and guitarist/vocalist Beatty continued building the album over the course of the next two years - a time that was not without its personal and pandemic-related setbacks.  But these complications gave the group an opportunity to perfect the tone and feel of the album, even as some songs became increasingly relevant while pressure to rush a finished product disappeared.

“We sought to make a HUGE sounding, smart, authentic, guitar-driven rock record with our unique flavor of power pop and punk aesthetic… essentially, hi-fi-meets-DIY! We definitely got that working with Drew, who allowed us time to breathe and explore,” said Beatty.

Though the extension proved to be a blessing, the moment for action has finally come for the crew. Having already released two singles from the new record (the Dandy Warhols-ish “Outside the Frame” and the summer rock banger “Twin Hearts”), Joybomb prepares for the release of American Cult Candy on August 26th.  They’re also sporting a new rhythm lineup with Clanton Blaylock on drums and Conner Booth on bass and vocals, as Lewis and Rowan have both departed to pursue other interests.  With Beatty still at the helm, Joybomb is staying busy bringing undeniably catchy riffage and melody – peppered with healthy doses of skepticism and fury - to audiences both at home and on the road.  Most importantly, they are readier than ever to unfurl the banner of pop punk poetry that is American Cult Candy.
